positive and negative shear diagram
In the simplest uniformly distributed load shear diagram, I'm very confused that at a perfect symmetrical condition, why the shear force has a positive and negative direction on either end. I would think the forces should be mirrored from the mid point. Can anyone help me understand?

Hi Mengfan,
Shear is like slicing - one part up and one part down. Cut a piece of card stock with scissors and look at the scissor and the cut it leaves closely. One side will be bent downwards.
Hope this helps.

Yes, it's important to understand that these force diagrams represent magnitude and direction.
