Drag and drop question problems

    Hi Patrick,

Thanks for posting your question. You are correct, there are Drag and Place items where all of the icons or terms will not be placed onto the background image. These instruction will be included in the question and read something like - Not all material labels will be used. One important thing to remember, not all boxes on the background image need to be filled with a term to answer an item correctly, especially if they don't make sense. The number of icons/terms does not always align with the boxes on the background image. This is intentional. My recommendation would be to focus on answering the question by only dragging the terms/icons onto the background image that make sense.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions on Drag and Place items.

    Nick,

Thanks for responding.  I think I understand how these questions are supposed to work but one question this morning in particular did not seem to make sense.  I don't want to discuss it on a public forum because of the NDA but I have serious misgivings about a specific question and feel that I either didn't understand it or it did not give me the correct number of items to drop. I am afraid that others may have encountered the same issue.

    Thank you,

    Patrick

    Nick NCARB,

I test Wednesday and I'd like to understand what you're saying.

For example if there are 5 boxes on a drag and drop drawing and 5 terms which are to be filled in but one of them does not seem right is it better to fill in only 4 boxes of the boxes leaving one term unused and one box blank?

My instinct would be to fill it in with that last term. Does one approach or the other help or hurt your score? Are drag and drop questions all or nothing with regard to scoring?

Thanks, and thanks Patrick for posting!

    Patrick,

I know exactly the question that you are referencing, and I can confirm that it is correct. The question actually tells you how many icons need to be moved onto the background image. I would recommend that you look out for this on Drag and Place items in the future.

    Tara,

There are Drag and Place items on ARE 5.0 where all of the icons or terms will not be placed onto the background image. If this is the situation, instruction will be included in the question and read something like - Not all material labels will be used. If this phrase does not exist in the question, all icons/terms need to be placed on the background to answer the item correctly. Also, you are correct, Drag and Place questions are all or nothing. There is no partial credit given for responses.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

    Patrick,

I tested yesterday as well and was also flustered about the directions for a drag and drop, so possibly the same one.  I emailed NCARB customer support regarding it and several other questions regarding the phrasing / content given. Hopefully it will be flushed out as the tests mature a bit.  I agree that we shouldn't be questioning ourselves due to confusing / misleading directions on these tests.
