This is in reference to the example question in ARE5 Review Manual, page 37-6.
In the problem they make an assumption that the footing is 7 feet wide and 12" tall. This gives a concrete weight and a soil bearing area (and weight) to input into the calculation. Magically the calculation shows the width of the footing should be 7 feet. However if I were to make an assumption the footing is only 4 feet wide it changes the concrete weight and soil weight enough to make the footing width only 6'-6".
How are we supposed to decide on the assumed footing dimensions? It seems like choosing the wrong assumption will give you the wrong dimensions.
