NCARB developed a new payment process for ARE 5.0 that provides candidates a bit more flexibility. You’ll now pay NCARB directly when you’re ready to take an exam and then be able to immediately select an appointment time or return later and use that open seat payment to schedule your appointment.
When you’re ready to pay for an ARE 5.0 exam appointment, simply follow the steps below.
- Log into your My NCARB record and click on the “Exams” tab. Then choose one of the “Pay and schedule >” buttons.
- A pop-up window will appear indicating that to schedule an ARE 5.0 division, you must first purchase an “open seat” at a Prometric test center. To do so, click “Pay and schedule.”
- Select your payment method.
- Provide payment details and billing address, and then click “Submit Payment.”
Once your payment is processed, you’ll be able to begin the scheduling process and select an open seat at a Prometric test center, or you can choose to wait and schedule an exam appointment later.
- You can begin the scheduling process by selecting the Schedule [Division Name] button. If you decide this isn’t the division you want to schedule, you click “Did you want to schedule a different division?” to select the name of the division you do want to schedule.
- If you want to pay now and schedule later (within a period of one year from the date of payment for an open seat), select “Schedule later.” To see how to schedule a previously paid for division, see the end of this article.
- After a few moments, you’ll be directed to Prometric’s scheduler to find a test center. Enter your address or zip code to find a test center near you. Click “Schedule an Appointment” next to the test center at which you want to make an appointment.
- Select the date on which you want to test. A list of available appointment times for your selected test center on your selected date will appear in the box to the right. Select the appointment time you prefer inside the box and click “Next.”
- Review the Appointment Verification screen and confirm the details of selected appointment including the division, date, time, and location of your appointment. If the details are not correct, click “< Back” to make adjustments.
Once you have confirmed all of the details are accurate, click the “Complete Appointment” button.
After you’ve completed the scheduling process, an appointment confirmation email will be sent to you. Your appointment information will also be accessible in your NCARB Record.
You can reschedule an ARE appointment within the applicable reschedule policy.
- To reschedule, choose the “Reschedule” link shown below the scheduled appointment date.
This will direct you to back to Prometric’s scheduler page where you will be able to investigate alternate testing sites, dates, and times. You will have to pay any applicable rescheduling fees as part of the rescheduling process.
If you’ve purchased an open seat and haven’t yet scheduled an appointment, your Exams tab will now allow you to schedule an exam appointment without paying again.
- To schedule an exam appointment for a particular division, click the “Schedule open seat >” button next to that division name.

Why do we have to use a last slide with an example where someone actually failed? Very encouraging guys!
It's not about not encouraging...it is about being helpful. Using a failing score report allows us to show how the reschedule part will look and work. If it was a pass, there is no reason to reschedule!
Is there a way to look to see if appointments for the 5.0 tests are available before the $100 gift card cut off date (1/31/17) without transitioning from 4.0 to 5.0, or do you have to make the transition before being able to schedule? Thanks!
Hey Darci...you have to transition to ARE 5.0 before being able to schedule an exam. The scheduling portion is actually done through Prometric as shown above.
Thanks @Ryan NCARB! I figured as much, but just thought I'd ask the question.
Is there any way to see test center schedule availability for ARE 5.0 without paying for the exam first?
If I paid for an open seat and were unable to schedule a test that year because of extenuating circumstances, would I be able to get a refund?
Kyle-
See this post to search available seats:
https://are5community.ncarb.org/hc/en-us/community/posts/115000450487-How-to-view-Available-Seats-at-Prometric-without-paying-transitioning-first-
Kyle, seat credits are good for one year. If you are really not able schedule an exam for an entire year due to "extenuating circumstances" then NCARB can work with you. However, extenuating circumstances would likely be something seriously medical related, not that you just couldn't find a seat time you wanted.
For some reason none of this is an option for me. When I go to my "exams" tag I only see options to schedule for decisions of the 4.0 test. Im not sure why I cannot register or even see the option of taking the 5.0 tests. Have you come across this problem before?
Alexander,
You currently have all ARE 4.0 eligibilities. If you want to begin taking ARE 5.0 exams, then you need to first transition to ARE 5.0. See HERE on how to do that.
What pains me is the fact that we now have to pay BEFORE knowing open dates. And before I hear all of the "you'll pay the money anyway", real world circumstances can get in the way and hurt the ability to pay bills and such.
Is there a way to pay for all my exams at once, before I schedule?
Hey Allison,
Yes! Since you are buying a "seat credit" that can be scheduled for anytime within the next year, you can absolutely buy all of your exams upfront and then scheduled when you are ready. Just remember that seat payment is good for one year.
Thanks Ryan!
When I initially clicked on "pay and schedule", I wanted to get a feel for the system, so I only paid for one seat. I don't remember seeing an option to purchase multiple seats, though. Now I have the option to "schedule open seat" for any one of the exams, but there is no more option to "pay and schedule". Are there instructions on how to purchase more seats without having to schedule an exam first?
Allison,
I looked into this a bit more for you. You can buy all of your seat credits now like I mentioned before, but it does require to schedule before buying the next seat credit. One way to do this would be to buy a seat credit, schedule that exam for 10 or 11 months out, then go back and buy another seat credit, schedule that exam for 10 or 11 months out, and keep repeating. When you are ready to take a division, you just reschedule that exam for earlier and you are ready to go. Remember there is no penalty for rescheduling 30 days prior to a scheduled exam. Does that all make sense?
"Bulk" purchases is a functionality we are hoping to add in the future, but we just don't have it yet.
OH, NO. Well, I may not be as bad off ice people testing today, or Monday, or yesterday, but I have a test scheduled with Prometric this week. It was scheduled through the MY NCARB, RECORD, EXAM interface, I believe the only way to schedule an exam, actually. My NCARB RECORD shows my first, maiden and surname. My Prometric reservation shows only first and surname.
Hello - I have a quick question regarding scheduling a test and name change and can't seem to get through to anyone at NCARB. Every time I call during business hours, the phones are off.
I sent in a request on Monday through email to have my name changed in my NCARB account from my maiden name to my new married name. I sent a copy of my marriage license, license with my new name, and NCARB account number along with it.
I know it takes 5-7 business days to process, but I wanted to double check if I can schedule a test while I'm waiting? There is a specific day I'm aiming for and I really don't want to lose out on the time slot. Can prometric change my name after NCARB does? Or do I have to wait for NCARB to change my name which thus changes my name in prometric?
Thanks!
Hello,
I understand you have 1 year to "schedule" your exam after purchasing the credits. Does that exam have to fall into the 1 year period, or can I schedule the exam within a year but for a date that falls a few months after the year expires?
Just found out that the seat credit is non-transferrable meaning if its purchased today, then it can't be transferred to use on a PSI exam. NCARB, please fix this. A seat credit is a seat credit. You guys cant nickel and dime us like that! I'm going to keep posting this on other forums.
